One of the largest confectionary producers in the world and famous chocolate brands installs Edina Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at production facility based in Cork, Ireland.
One of the largest confectionary producers in the world and famous chocolate brands installs Edina Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at production facility based in Cork, Ireland.
The family owned confectionery company founded in 1946 in Italy, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chocolate and other confectionery products. Employing approximately 21,500 people throughout the Group of 38 trading companies and 18 factories, they produce world famous brands.
After successfully installing cogeneration at a number of their plants throughout the world, in 2013, the client decided to investigate the feasibility of installing a CHP plant at their facility in Cork, Ireland.
On completion and review of this study, it was decided that a natural gas fuelled CHP unit, with a reciprocating engine prime mover, giving a nominal electrical output of 1500kW, was the most suitable technology available.
In 2014, following a comprehensive and competitive tendering process and review period, Ireland’s leading supplier, installer and maintenance provider for CHP, gas and diesel power generation solutions, Edina, was awarded the contract to deliver the full turnkey contract.
Edina was selected as the preferred bidder due to their ability as a total solutions provider, and capability to deliver the full EPC contract. Furthermore, Edina is the official distributor in Ireland and the UK for MWM reciprocating gas engine technology. MWM is one of the world’s leading gas engine manufacturers, and are capable of achieving market leading electrical and thermal efficiencies, low operating and servicing costs and high reliability and availability, which is usually well in excess of 95%.
The engine supplied was an MWM TCG 2020 V16 with an electrical output of 1560kW, being incorporated within a fully operational co-generation plant giving the client electricity, steam, High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) & Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) to be used on-site.
This offers high plant efficiency and both significant financial and environmental savings, resulting in a short, simple payback to maximise the return on investment for the client, whilst improving business competitiveness.
As part of the full turnkey package, Edina will also supply an Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery Steam Boiler and Bypass, Electrical Switchgear and Transformer, as well as the complete Mechanical and Electrical installation to interface with the existing services, which have to completed in-line with planned annual plant shutdowns.
Precise Project Management and co-ordination between the client and Edina was essential for the successful completion of this project.
Edina has vast experience in the role of principal contractor for large power generation projects, with all design, containerisation and control panel assembly conducted in-house at its manufacturing facility in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
Edina also offers long term, fixed price Operation & Maintenance Contracts offering industry leading availability guarantees with one of the largest Service Team in Ireland, having over 30 directly employed Service Engineers located throughout Ireland, at three fully equipped Irish Service Depots.
