Formed in Dublin in 1783 by the Royal Charter, Bank of Ireland is Ireland’s leading commercial bank and financial institution responsible for the financial affairs of many of Ireland’s leading companies, as well as over 70% of international companies that have chosen to set up business in Ireland.
The Bank of Ireland Group also operates and offers corporate banking internationally with offices in eight locations worldwide including Dublin, Belfast, London, Bristol, Paris, Frankfurt, Chicago and Stamford, Connecticut.
As part of their long term plan and strategy to modernise and improve their existing infrastructure, Bank of Ireland decided to upgrade the diesel generators at their Operations Centre in Cabintelly, Dublin. A number of leading generator suppliers were invited to tender for this extremely important and prestigious diesel generator installation. The diesel generators will provide standby power for the critical services required to keep their business fully operational during a mains failure.
After an extensive review and evaluation process, Edina was selected as the banks preferred supplier for a number of reasons. As one of Ireland’s leading combined heat and power (CHP), gas and diesel power generation solution providers, across their 30 year history, Edina have vast experience in installing large full turnkey power generation projects across Ireland and the UK.
Within industry, Edina has a reputation for delivering similar projects on time and within budget. This proven track record and as an existing supplier to the bank, coupled with a full understanding of the banks strategic requirements, positioned Edina as the preferred turnkey contractor.
The project included the supply, installation and commissioning of two new 1,000kVA prime rated diesel generators installed within an existing plant room within the banks Operations Centre.
Based on the client specification, Edina selected the Perkins Diesel Engines and Stamford Alternators due to their suitability, world renowned quality, and market leading reliability.
Edina have access to the full range of global diesel prime movers and alternator manufacturers, tailoring a diesel power generation solution to suit the needs of the client.
As part of the full turnkey contract, Edina supplied a fully integrated fuel system, including bulk and daily fuel tanks and associated transfer system, and full attenuation of the existing plant room to achieve a noise level of 75dBA at 1m in Free Field Conditions.
Designed and manufactured in-house at Edina’s purpose built facility based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, a sophisticated bespoke control system was designed to synchronise both diesel generators together and to the mains. All in accordance with Ireland’s Grid Network provider ‘Electricity Supply Board’ (ESB) G10 regulations and associated protection requirements.
Edina’s Project Management team faced a number of challenges. Namely due to the extremely tight time frames and aggressive project schedule necessary to comply with the bank’s planned annual maintenance shutdown and changeover. Edina was confident of achieving this by using vastly experienced existing suppliers, from Edina’s approved supplier list, with long standing working relationships and proven track record of achieving critical procurement and delivery schedules on time.
The plant layout and design was also critical as the new generators were installed into an existing plant room with only one external wall, getting the air flow right for cooling and combustion was a key factor. After design review with the client and the Edina project management team, in accordance with Edina’s internal procedures, a solution was devised. Using a roof mounted, sound attenuated, penthouse to bring fresh air into the plant room. With the remaining external wall being used to exhaust the air to atmosphere, maintaining the required noise level outside of the plant room using purpose built attenuation.
The two new Edina installed diesel generators improve engine emission efficiency, reliability and availability, and maintain security of power supply for this mission critical infrastructure.
