Microgrid solution ‘Highly Commended’ at AD & Biogas Industry Awards

Jul 19, 2024

Edina’s microgrid project with BioteCH4 has been recognised at the AD and Biogas Industry Awards 2024 within the ‘Best Biogas Plant Above 1MWe Equivalent’ category.

The ‘Highly Commended’ project at Holme Bioenergy benefits from a microgrid, hybrid configuration co-locating on-site generation from Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Battery Energy Storage assets to solve grid supply limitations and accelerate the energy transition towards net zero.

Holme Bioenergy is a food waste recycling plant owned and operated by BioteCH4, a leading UK commercial food waste management company.

“Another pioneering facility, Edina and BioteCH4 has integrated CHP engines and battery storage to overcome being off-grid for electricity. Treating food waste feedstock, the Holme Bioenergy site delivers gas to grid, utilises thermal heat on site and has a private wire to a neighbouring engineering and construction business Park Fabrications. A superb example of maximising assets.”

Leveraging low-carbon natural gas in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants not only elevates BioteCH4's carbon positioning but also paves the way for biogas or biomethane fuel utilisation, with the potential for transitioning to hydrogen blends in the future.

The co-location for Battery Energy Storage and Standby Generation provides additional energy resilience, operational continuity and asset flexibility for future site expansion.

By working in unison, these transformative technologies champion BioteCH4’s future growth by securing its energy production through sustainable sources and are aligned with its energy transition pathway. Congratulations to the teams at BioteCH4 and Edina for delivering another recognised project.”

About the AD and Biogas Industry Awards

The AD and Biogas Industry Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and innovations in the global anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas sectors. Co-organised by the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) in partnership with the World Biogas Association (WBA), the awards ceremony, held 10 July 2024 at the NCC in Birmingham, UK, recognised the exceptional international contributions of individuals, companies and projects that have demonstrated excellence and leadership in advancing the biogas industry.

The award winners, judged by an expert panel representing the global biogas sector, exemplify the innovation, dedication and progress driving the global shift towards sustainable circular economy solutions to waste and energy issues.
